The embargo on the photos of the new VW Scirocco hatch due for Geneva has broken, so we’re happy to bring you some of the first shots available of the new car. Although it’s not quite the compact blend of sexy and sleek the show car promised, it does represent a new direction in VW design. Read on for high-res photos of the car from the front and back and a quick analysis of the changes from the Iroc concept.
Notable differences from the concept include the lack of the metal grille surround, which gave the original such great visual impact. Also different is most of the rest of the front fascia, with different air intakes, an altered hood line and different, though similar, headlights.
The thicker A-pillar and chunky hood-door transition area break up the flow found on the concept, and whereas the sculpted hips and rear canopy of the Iroc concept gave the hatch a muscular stance, the squared belt line and blocky C-pillar area give the production car a low, somewhat cramped look. From behind, the Scirocco looks a bit more attractive, and fairly closely matches the concept’s lines, but the trapezoidal, dual exhaust outlets on either side of the rear underbody have been traded for twin round pipes at the left corner - decidedly less attractive, though probably a good deal cheaper to manufacturer and route.

また2012年までにGMは米国で半分をエタノール車にする計画だそうですが、そうだとすると、ただでさえ食料と競合しはじめ、穀物の高騰が起こっているだけに果たしてどうなのかと疑問に感じます。世界の水使用量は急増してきており、水資源の危機といわれているだけに、エタノール燃料の需要が増えるとそちらの影響も気になるところです。

Due out in 2011, the new compact cars are set to replace the Fox at the entry level in the Volkswagen lineup. The Lupo will use an all-new rear-engine/rear-wheel-drive layout that is said to enable them to be produced much more cheaply and with greater production-line efficiency than traditional front-engine/front-wheel-drive small cars.

Although not alluded to at the time of their unveilings at last year's Frankfurt and Tokyo auto shows, the unusual name of the concept cars was a thinly veiled hint at the re-emergence of the Lupo name, by using its middle two letters followed by an exclamation mark ― Up!

Volkswagen is building a tradition of previewing the names of new models on concept cars. The two-door IROC coupe used the middle part of the Scirocco name that it will carry into production.

Volkswagen last used the Lupo name (Italian for "wolf") in 2005 but ditched it in favor of the name Fox when it replaced its most popularly priced model in Europe.

フランクフルト――販売台数で欧州最大手の自動車メーカー、ドイツのフォルクスワーゲンは22日、今年1月の世界規模での販売数が計48万5千台と同月としては史上最高を記録したと発表した。前年同月比で11％増。

車種拡大などが功を奏したとしている。欧州市場が好調で、7.4％増の22万4千台。アジアはさらに需要が活発で33.7％増の10万5千台。このうち中国が36.7％増の9万4千台だった。

景気後退が指摘される米国では逆に8.8％減の2万1千台。北米市場全体では10.3％減の3万7千台だった。

同社はフォルクスワーゲンの他、アウディ、ベントレーなどのブランド車も持つが、フォルクスワーゲンの販売台数は13％増の28万8千台、アウディは4.7％増の7万9千台などだった。

　24日午前9時54分ごろ、神奈川県鎌倉市津西1丁目の湘南モノレール西鎌倉駅で、下り電車（3両編成）が約40メートルオーバーランして停車する事故があった。けが人はなかったが、ブレーキの故障が原因とみられることから、国土交通省の航空・鉄道事故調査委員会が調査を始めた。モノレールは単線で、本来は駅ですれ違う仕組みになっているが、この事故のため、対向してきた上り電車（3両編成）も駅の手前で停止。上下両線の先頭車両の間は19メートルしかなかった。
湘南モノレール社（本社・鎌倉市）などによると、電車には運転士と車掌が乗っていた。下り電車は、駅から単線への切り替えポイントに当たって止まっていたが、上り電車が自動列車停止装置（ATS）で止まったのか、運転士がブレーキをかけて止まったのか不明だという。

　上り電車は、駅手前の高さ約6.7メートルの地点で停止。乗客15人のうち10人は車両底のハッチから非常脱出袋で地上に降り、残る5人は市消防本部のはしご車で救出された。車両の下近くは、交差点やテニスコートだった。一方、オーバーランした下り電車は、最後尾の車両が駅のホームに接していたため、乗客22人はそこから降りたという。

　この下り電車は、昨年12月に営業運転を始めたばかりの新型車両だった。湘南モノレールの1日平均の利用者は2万8千人前後という。

[Champ Car and Indy Racing League agree to merger/Motor Authority]より引用:
The Indy Racing League and Champ Car series have signed a deal today agreeing to a merger, ending a 12-year conflict by bringing the two open-wheel races under a single IRL series. Champ Car owners Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe signed the agreement with IRL founder Tony George today, just a month before the season opener at Homestead on March 29.
Neither Champ Car nor IRL have managed to capture the audience they enjoyed prior to the 1995 split, and both have been struggling to compete with NASCAR and were close to going bankrupt just as the original CART series did in the early part of the decade, reports Sporting News. Champ Car was started in 2004 after Kalkhoven and Forsythe bought the rights to the bankrupt CART series in the 2003 offseason.
Both competitions also saw a number of high-profile drivers jump ship to rival NASCAR and F1 including last season’s Indy 500 and IRL championship winner Dario Franchitti and 2007 Champ Car winner Sebastien Bourdais.

　ヤナセは01年末に当時のダイムラー・クライスラー日本（現メルセデス・ベンツ日本）の要請などを受けて、クライスラー車の販売を開始。現在、全国12店舗を構え、07年9月期には約800台を販売した。「ダッジ」ブランド投入で前年度比約２割増加したが、ヤナセグループの新車販売に占めるクライスラー車の比率は２％程度。

Volkswagen is to unveil a diesel-electric hybrid Golf capable of returning an astonishing 83.1mpg and emitting just 89g/km of carbon dioxide.
This isn't Volkswagen's first hybrid: it experimented with a trial petrol-electric fleet in the early 90s and it has been developing diesel-electric units for some years (one took part in the 2004 Challenge Bibendum eco-car rally in Shanghai).
This is the first near-production example, however, and the first of many.
The technology will be used in a number of Volkswagen Group models, including the Jetta saloon - which sells in greater numbers in the US than the 'Rabbit' - and the Audi A3.
The diesel-electric powertrain has been developed specifically with the US market in mind, and California in particular.
As well as the Euro 5 emissions criteria, it will meet the US BIN 5 requirements for sale in all 50 states.

Volkswagen’s Tiguan is already getting some interesting makeovers, latest courtesy of Bavarian 4x4 specialist Delta. Two models are created, a road version and an offroad sibling. A few changes have taken place in this manner: suspension has been lowered by some 30mm (for a small fee of €490) for the road car, with flared wings, wider wheels and a sport exhaust system to sound the part.
　Go has been taken care of as well, to the tune of some 169 bhp/ 126kW and 384Nm of torque, both up on the standard vehicle. Power, which may or may not corrupt, comes at a price. In this case it’s €1,300. Offroad tyres range from 16 to 22 inches, depending. Costs are the same for both types of car.
　If you choose to take to the bush you can opt for the higher Tiguan, raised all of 50mm. Cosmetically the radiator grille gets same paint as wheels. Whether this is a good thing or not is really up to the buyer, although €330 later one may consider it money ill-spent. Each to his own then. Take the offroad car and part with some €39,772.

　首脳陣が「絶対に失敗は許されない。お客様に笑顔で帰宅していただく」とする今年の開催に向けて、富士スピードウェイでは高瀬由紀夫代表取締役副社長を本部長をとした「F1事業本部」を新たに部から本部に格上げし、人員を倍増させF1事業の推進を強化。また、コンセプトを「安心で確実な交通アクセス」「楽しく快適な観戦環境」とし、さまざまな要素の見直しを行なった。
　昨年導入されたバスによるチケット＆ライドシステムに関しては、「スーパーGTの時、自家用車で来場する台数が18000台程度。これが退出するのに3時間程度かかる。これをF1の時に実施すると、周辺に渋滞を起こしてしまうだけでなく、退出に10時間以上かかってしまう」とのことから、システム継続を決定。今年の決勝日は3連休の中日にあたり周辺の交通渋滞が懸念されるが、「渋滞を避けるバスルートを設定」することや、サーキット内や周辺にバスを待機させ、雨天時などでもバスの中で待つことができる「留置き方式」を採用し、シンプルな導線を構築することにより、「バスが来ない」事態を避ける方策が採られている。また、上記のトラブルに対し未舗装エリアの舗装、場内動線の整備、歩行者動線の拡幅、新設、整備、仮設トイレ、照明の増設などを行なうとのこと。チケット購入時には、指定駅やバス乗降場、観戦席までの所要時間を事前に提供するなどの対策もとられる。
　ホスピタリティに関しては、スタッフ、警備員の増員、教育・訓練の充実化、トイレの適正配置、照明の充実、インフォメーションセンターの増員、案内看板の増設、大型スクリーンの増設やサイズアップ、応援幕、旗は危険でない限り自由とする、FM、携帯サイトなどを活用した情報提供などを実施。看板の英語表記なども実施されるとのこと。地元と連携した企画の実施も行なわれるとのことだ。
　さらに、昨年陥没してバスの混乱を招いた東1バス乗り場の舗装や、これまで未舗装だった駐車場の舗装、歩道の整備や歩道橋の新設、照明、スピーカーの増設など、インフラ面も是正していくとのこと。また、大きな変更として、昨年の最大観客数から減らした11万人を来場予定者数とし、それに伴い昨年のB席、G席、J席は廃止し、新たに救護所などを設置する予定とのこと。

The latest variation of the volume A4 model, the all-new Avant wagon, will be on display at next month’s Geneva Motor Show where it will be making its worldwide debut before going on sale in just over a month. Based on the same technology layout as the sedan, the new Avant gets the same newly developed five-link front axle and will initially be available with just five engine types, two petrol units and three diesels.
Compared to the previous model, the proportions have been reconfigured in a new, sportier design. The front overhang has been shortened, and the engine hood and the wheel base have gained considerably in length. The car measures in at 4.70m in length, almost 12cm longer than the previous model and its body is considerably more rigid but weighs 10% less thanks to the increased use of lightweight aluminum.
With up to 1,430L in volume, the latest A4 Avant has the largest luggage capacity in this segment. With the rear seats remaining standing, luggage space is reduced to just 490L. 　
As previously stated, the new model will be launched on the market with two petrol engines and two diesel engines that cover a range of 105kW (143hp) to 195kW (265hp). Audi’s 2.0L TDI generating 125kW (170hp) will be added later to round out the range.

Peugeot has been using a range of BMW-sourced four-cylinder engines in its cars for years and now sister brand Citroen has confirmed its new models will also get the British-built engines. The engines come in several different flavours, including turbo and naturally aspirated versions, and range from 1.4 to 1.6L in displacement.
Peugeot uses the engines to power its 207 and 308 models but Citroen hasn’t confirmed which of its cars will use the BMW engines. According to WhatCar?, the new engines will likely debut in the Citroen C5 by the end of the decade. In the Mini, the engines produce outputs of 120,150 and 175hp, and includes direct-injection and variable valve timing technologies. 　
The key reason for the move is to allow Citroen to take advantage of BMW’s EfficientDynamics engine stop-start technology, which the French carmaker hopes to eventually roll out across its entire lineup. The system Citroen plans to use will be the same as the current design in the Mini, where the engine cuts out while stationary and restarts when the driver selects first gear.

Fiat first displayed its rejuvenated Abarth brand at last year’s Geneva Motor Show with the unveiling of Grande Punto Abarth S2000 racer concept. It quickly followed this up with another concept, the Punto Abarth SS (Super Sport) at the Frankfurt Motor Show that same year, and now we can finally get a look at the first all-new production Abarth model with this leaked official image of the Fiat 500 Abarth.

The new hot-hatch will be making its debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show and will be joined further down the track by the larger Fiat Grande Punto Abarth model. To differentiate the performance Abarth line, the new car comes with a sporty bodykit with larger air intakes, side skirts, a rear diffuser, pumped fenders, Abarth decals and new alloys. The interior will continue the sporty theme with new bucket seats, alloy pedals and leather trim.
No official stats have been released but expect to see Fiat Group’s turbocharged T-Jet petrol engine developing around the 150hp mark. The car will also feature an upgraded handling pack, with larger wheels and stiffer suspension to allow it to compete with BMW’s brilliant Mini.

Peugeot announced today that it is adding a third car to its Le Mans 24 Hour programme with new drivers from F1, hoping to dart a closer hit to its archenemy Audi this time around. The new drivers in the team are Christian Klien (new BMW Sauber test driver and former F1 racer), Alex Wurz (Honda’s test driver), Frank Montagny (Toyota’s former tester), Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta. Christian Klien in particular is apparently the youngest in this ten-man team, and is thrilled in helping his ‘new’ team to achieve its goals.
Peugeot hopes this progress will help to form a more powerful endurance team, together with its existing great drivers like Marc Gene, Nicolas Minassian, Pedro Lamy, Stephane Sarrazin, and many more. The announcement comes today after three days of testing the car at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France.
This news indeed has added zing to this year’s Le Mans Series, likely with some hot head-to-head competitions.

　In a recent interview with Automotive News, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Stefan Jacoby, said that the Passat CC will be priced below $27,000. The CC is supposed to fit between the regular Passat at the upcoming Phaeton that may come back to the U.S. with a smaller-wheelbase and diesel options.
　The Passat CC lineup will start with a 2.0 TSI unit that produces 197 hp and a 3.6 FSI V6 that produces 276hp. Both engines are mated with a 6-speed automatic Triptronic transmission. The Passat CC 3.6 V6 FSI is offered with 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard equipment and has the ability to do 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds.
